The Savannas around the world are found in the places highlighted in orange. Savannas are found in many continents worldwide. The more prominent locations are Africa, Australia, Asia, and South America. In Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela savannas occupy 2.5 million square kilometers. Because savannas are found in numerous places worldwide; the following information on this particular page will pertain to African Savannas. This is also because the African savanna is the largest, most vast, savanna in the world. However, savannas have similar biotic and abiotic factors, with the exception of differing specific species.

Elephants are common animals found in savannas. Hence, their common name is the savanna elephant and their species name is African Elephant. These are specifically the largest African savanna elephant.
Hunting dogs are a prominent predator (carnivore) in savannas. In African savannas, their species is pictus. Their scientific name translates to painted wolf.
The Savanna Baboon's species name is ursinus. Think of baboons as the savanna's version of a monkey. However, unlike you would think, they do not spend most of their time in the trees. They spend most of their time on the ground.
The savanna is a perfect environment for birds of prey, such as hawks and buzzards. The open, wide, and vast plain provides them with an acceptation view and advantage on prey. While the hot air uplifts assist them souring, they have an occasional tree to rest in.
These are few among the many species and individual animals that roam the savanna grassland. Giraffes, ostriches, cheetahs, lions, and antelopes are other common examples. They are shown in the picture above.

An example of a primary producer in the savanna is the Senegal Gum Acacia, a small to average sized thorn tree. These trees can grow up to twenty meters tall. They are a well-known tree species in the savanna grassland.
The Candelabra, Jackalberry, Jarrah, Manketti, and Umbrella Thron Acacia tress are few examples among the many tree species that thrive in this environment. Certain types of trees have thick, fire resistant bark and trunks that are able to store water.

Elephant Grass is another example of a primary producer in the savanna. It can grow to be more than ten feet tall and receives it's name due to being a popular choice of food for elephants.
Other grasses, such as Bermuda grasses, occupy the environments primary producer grasses. There is an abundant supply of this resource. Roughly 2 million large first level consumers roam the savanna.
Plants in general in this environment have developed long tap roots to be able to reach down to water.

The savanna has a wet/dry climate. This means that there is a distinct dry season and wet season. During the dry season, most primary producers shrivel up and die. The dry season is considered to be winter. Some sources of water such as rivers, streams, and reservoirs, completely dry up due to the temperature. This causes animals to migrate to a new area. The wet season occurs in the summer months. At this time, mostly all the rain, anywhere from thirty to fifty inches, that the savanna gets will fall. This rain revives the plants and fills up the rivers, streams, and reservoirs. With the new source of food and water the animal species migrate back into the area. During these seasons any temperature changes that occur will be very minor. The temperature fluctuation are gradual, not drastic.

Miscellaneous Facts
  • The African Savanna is a big tourist attraction. However, the introduction of vehicles has caused some harm to various plants and animals.
  • The savannas of the world fascinate scientists due to the diverse soils found within them. Almost every type of soil can be found somewhere within the savannas.
  • The plants of the savanna can adapt very easily to a changing climate. As talked about above in our climate section, in the wet season the plants dry up but are not completely dead. This means that when the rain falls they adjust back to regular condition.
  • Many illegal guided hunts occur in the savanna in order to obtain animal pelts.
  • During the dry season, some animals go so long without water they barely make it alive to the start of the wet season.
